Designing for Civic Engagement
Please watch this.
One mission of this web site is to get the people of Central New York involved in making the region more livable, and we haven’t seen a better explanation of the barriers to civic engagement than this TEDx talk by Dave Meslin. We were particularly struck by the Notice of Zoning Change Application design.
I just 7 minutes, Meslin debunks the notion of civic apathy and gives us a call to action for making our lives and our cities better. Bad design is effectively the same as intentional exclusion, and the best way to end that exclusion is to ensure our civic systems talk to us the way our commercial systems do.
Please watch. Then spread this to people in local government. And if you’re inspired, tell us how you would get people involved and design better civic systems. We’re looking forward to hearing from you. Send your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org
