Sharkey’s Bar & Grill: CNY Volleyball Destination

Wondering where to catch the hottest summer sport in Central New York? Look no further, Sharkey’s Bar & Grill, located in Liverpool, has the perfect atmosphere for anyone interested in beach volleyball.

Owner Jim Nichols, a native of Southern California, grew up playing beach volleyball on the legendary beaches, and he’s infused Sharkey’s with that SoCal vibe.

Sharkey’s has only been open for five years, but in that short time they’ve quadrupled the number of sand volleyball courts. With eight courts, Sharkey’s offers a place to play for people of all ages and levels. Most weeknights they have leagues for people who enjoy playing on a regular basis. Each of the leagues is specialized for a different level or type of team, from basic doubles to coed 4s. But the weekends are when things really start to heat up at Sharkey’s.

In the summertime, beach volleyball players live for weekend tournaments. All over the country sand courts are filled with players on Saturdays and Sundays. In Syracuse, Sharkey’s is the place to be if you’re looking for this scene. This year they have partnered with the AVP, the premier beach volleyball league in the US.  Partnering with the AVP will dramatically improve the level of play by “bring[ing] the best men and women players on the east coast to the Beach at Sharkey’s,” says Nichols who was a member of the AVP tour in the 1990s and early 2000s.

In addition to the elite tournaments, there will also be many intermediate and recreational tournaments throughout the summer months at Sharkey’s. All of the tournament and league information is provided on Sharkey’s website.

Whether you are an avid volleyball player or a beginner looking to get more involved, Sharkey’s Bar & Grill is the perfect summer hangout location to fulfill your beach volleyball desires.
