History of Syracuse Antiques Exchange

Syracuse Antiques Exchange is a four-floor mall filled with antique and vintage items. It was started in 1991 by David Jenks, a lighting dealer. He wanted to expand his business and work with other antique dealers, so he bought the warehouse that still houses the Exchange today.

Matthew Pastore, the Exchange’s general manager, said the warehouse itself was built in the 1880s. It was originally a metal foundry for making things like horseshoes and gears. During the 20th century, it was an appliance store and eventually, a mattress warehouse. After that, it became defunct for a while until Jenks bought the location to bring other antique dealers in Central New York in one space.

Now, the Exchange boasts four packed floors of antiques and vintage wares from over 50 dealers. It’s the largest antique mall in Central New York, located on 1629 N. Salina St. It’s open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Real-life Treasure Hunt

If you’ve never gone antiquing or bought something at a secondhand store before, don’t worry. Pastore says their employees are not antique dealers themselves, which means they’re more concerned about helping customers than selling items.

“We’ve tried to make it more of an approachable shopping experience for people who come in,” he says.

So take your time and peruse their wares. Antique dealers are responsible for setting up their own booths inside the warehouse. If you walk around all four floors, you’ll see that items aren’t displayed in the same way. That’s because antique dealers have their own style — both in how they set up their booths and what kinds of items they offer.

“People come here to buy things you won’t necessarily find at your regular retail or chain store because those tend to follow the same trends,” Pastore says. “If you want something different, this is a good place to find it.”

He’s not lying. There are so many interesting things you’ll find inside, such as mid-century modern furniture, vintage Chanel bags, old typewriters, retro lamps and fur coats. They also have all kinds of oddities like porcelain dolls, Ouija boards and even a handmade suit of armor (by a guy who only makes eight of them each year).

“There’s something for everyone’s budget — from $10,000 paintings to $5 character glasses,” Pastore says. “There are things you’d see in a museum, but here, there’s a price on it. You could get something someone made 5,000 years ago and have it at your table at home.”

Syracuse Antiques Exchange isn’t just a shopping destination. They also host several events during the year to bring in new customers. Pastore says they wanted to be more social and fun because the store can be overwhelming for some people.

For example, they had a “Mystery at The Exchange” event early November. They partnered with the Museum of Intrigue for an after-hours mystery game — complete with wine, craft beer and appetizers. Attendants immersed themselves in a mystery storyline and solved different puzzles inside the warehouse.

例如,他们在11月初举行了“ Mystery at The Exchange ”活动。

They’re also having a “Black Friday Sleep In” on November 23. The store will open later at 11 a.m. instead of 10:30 a.m. and will kick off their holiday sale. They’ll also have giveaways, brunch bites and a mimosa bar.
