Syracuse Transportation Guide: Centro Bus v.s. Uber
Students, welcome to Syracuse University.
Whether it’s your freshman year or you’re a senior that’s relieved upstate New York finally caught up with the times and now offers Uber. If you don’t have a car, you’ll constantly have to stop and consider the best way to get where you need to go.
Now that the city does have Uber, there are more options. Depending on how much time you have, how far you’re going, how many people you’re traveling with, and how much you’re willing to spend, you’ll opt for a different ride.
Syracuse’s Centro bus system can be complicated- you’ll have to decipher multiple bus schedules to find your bus number.
For the days that you’re choosing between public transportation (which only costs $2 oneway) and Uber, here’s our guide to make decision-making simple for a couple of key Syracuse locations.

To escape the stresses of class and homework, what’s better than retail therapy or dinner at the Cheesecake Factory? Destiny USA is the 6th largest mall in the United States, and the perfect destination for a cloudy or cold Syracuse day.
Considering calling an Uber? It will take you nine minutes to get there from SU campus, and it’ll cost around $9.70 one way.
Taking the Centro bus, here’s your best option:
Welcome to Upstate New York, where the pride and joy of the people is a grocery store- not just any grocery store: Wegmans! You’ll find a wide selection of products, prepared foods, a coffee bar- Wegmans has it all. Wegmans has no equal, so during your time at Syracuse, it’s not hard to decide which grocery store to give your loyalty. But for students without cars, finding a way there can be confusing and frustrating. Let’s break down your options:
Uber: For a single rider, taking an Uber from SU to the closest Wegmans would be
$24.34. To make the ride worth it, consider going with a group of friends and splitting the
cost. You’ll spend about 18 minutes travel time roundtrip.
Thinking about Centro Syracuse? While you’ll be limited by how much groceries you can personally carry, this option is much cheaper. Consider the following route:
Greyhound Bus Station
The Syracuse Bus Station is the portal which connects Syracuse and other cities in Central New York. From the terminal, you can reach bustling New York City, its neighbor New Jersey, and the natural wonder of Ithaca. Between busses and Uber, you have plenty of options on how to get there.
Uber: 15 minutes oneway from SU costs about $20.00.
By Centro bus:
While we love Syracuse and Central New York – from time to time we need to get out and broaden our horizons under the Mexican sun or in the streets of Los Angeles. Syracuse Hancock International Airport can take you to a number of cities where you can catch a connection flight to your dream destination. But this will be the easy part of your journey; it will be much more difficult to get to the airport from the university.
If you look at the Centro bus schedule you’ll see that it’s impossible to take public transportation the whole course of the way to the airport since the Syracuse Centro bus system doesn’t operate to this location.
But don’t fret, there are options:
By Uber, the trip will take about 15 minutes, and you’ll spend around $25.00.
