The Search for Authentic Italy in CNY

Central New Yorkers have strong connections to Italy, but to a native coming straight from Rome, there’s a deep need for authentic Italian ingredients. Nothing makes Italians prouder than our food. Of course, we’re famous for our romance and fashion, but neither of those compare to a good plate of mom’s lasagna.

If you want to create the authentic taste of Italy in Syracuse, there are a few places that are worth visiting.

Many Italians populated this area during the 1880s and 1920s. The descendants of these first-generation Italian-Americans own many local businesses that offer true Italian ingredients, the base of the best Italian food.

LivableCNY wanted to know where it could find a slice of Italy. So, we had a “real” Italian search across the area and approve our list of the Best Italian Places to visit in Central New York.

Lombardi’s Import Market is one of the few real Italian markets in CNY.

Lombardi’s Import Market, 534 Butternut St.
Domenico Lombardi is the owner of this small family business where 95 percent of the products are imported directly from Italy. Fifty years ago, the Lombardis moved from Calabria, a region in the south of Italy. After two years in the U.S., Domenico’s father opened the market on Butternut Street. The market offers a wide selection of products that range from prosciutto to buffalo mozzarella. You can also find delicious, homemade pasta and cannoli.

Angotti’s Family Restaurant, 725 Burnet Ave.
If you want homemade, old school Italian food, then Angotti’s Family Restaurant is the place to go. The restaurant offers authentic Italian food with American-sized portions at an affordable price. But if you’re trying to enjoy your pizza and pasta in a quiet setting, Angotti’s may not be the best choice. It doesn’t have an upscale image, but who cares about the decor when the food is just amazing? Gnocchi and baked ziti above all.

Gianni’s Pizza, 1428 Burnet Ave.
The Bronx is famous for pizza because of its Italian population. Gianni’s Pizza bring the best traditional Bronx-style pizza to Syracuse. Classic recipes and the best ingredients are the main features of these thin crust pizza pies, which is popular among many Italians. Don’t forget to fold the slice when you eat it.
