NEVER Walk alone

because most crime occurs at night and usually involves people are walking alone or with just one other person, it’s better to walk in groups of three or more, especially at night, as this deters assailants from attempting to harm you.

Always lock your window

Most theft cases happen when residents don’t lock their windows. Unfortunately, many old houses in Syracuse aren’t as safe as they should be, so make sure your windows cannot be opened from outside. If there’s no secure lock, you should purchase one.

More lights equal more safety

Thieves usually commit a crime in dark conditions. If you’re in a house instead of an apartment building with numerous safety features, ask your landlord to change to the highest wattage light bulbs and install a camera if they can.

Download the LiveSafe app

For students living near campus, the LiveSafe app acts as a “mobile blue light” that allows users to contact with the Emergency communication center directly. It also contains a function that students can ask friends to watch them walk or watch a friend walk, which can increase safety when students need to walk home.
